NDIS October 2024 Updates: What You Need to Know

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has introduced key updates as of October 3, 2024

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has introduced key updates as of October 3, 2024, aimed at improving clarity and efficiency for participants and providers alike. Whether you are currently using the NDIS, or you're a provider assisting those who do, these changes are important to understand.

New Support Lists for Participants

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of new support lists. These lists specify what supports are covered by the NDIS and what are excluded. This move is designed to give participants and providers clearer guidelines on what the NDIS will fund, making it easier to plan and manage supports. The lists were finalized after a period of public consultation, and while they are not permanent, they provide much-needed certainty during this transitional period

Participants who already receive funding for supports that are now excluded will not lose access to those supports immediately. However, if the support is not included in the list, new requests may face challenges. Participants are encouraged to review these lists with their Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or provider to ensure continued access to essential services

Changes to NDIS Plan Management

Another critical update relates to how NDIS plans are managed. Starting this month, all new plans will have a 12-month duration. This is a temporary measure, but future plans may last longer depending on further updates to the scheme. In addition, the NDIS now has more authority to change how plans are managed if funds are not used according to the outlined plan. For example, if a participant's funds are mismanaged, the NDIA can switch the plan from self-managed to NDIA-managed(

New Claims Framework and Participant Notices

From now on, all claims for services must be made within two years of the service being provided. This new claims framework aims to streamline payments and avoid backlogs. Additionally, starting in January 2025, new participants will receive impairment notices confirming their eligibility, further formalizing their access to the scheme(

Preparing for the Changes

For many participants, these updates may bring a sense of clarity and reassurance. However, some might face difficulties if their previously funded supports are not included in the updated lists. To ease this transition, there will be a "transition period" where the NDIS will take an educative approach, helping participants understand the changes without penalizing them for initial mistakes(
